Work Underground

Underground are looking to grow our team for Fringe 2012!

For three weeks in July, we gather a team of extraordinary young people to turn a few simple rooms into a buzzing, bustling hub of creativity. With our biggest programme ever –  75 acts, 250 performances – we decided it’s time to bring some more people into the team.

We’re looking to recruit at least two new members:

  • A technical manager to oversee one of our spaces, liaising with artists, operating shows and overseeing tech rehearsals
  • A box office manager to join our front of house team, with considerable responsibility for our public-facing operations

Both roles offer a huge amount of hands-on experience of managing a venue. You’ll join a tight-knit team of young people, all working together to realise something wonderful.

Both jobs are ideal for students or recent graduates, looking to massively extend their skillset and experience of professional theatre, and work with some of the biggest names on the UK Fringe scene.

Officially, you’re volunteers. But we pay a bonus to all our staff based on the venue’s turnover. The last few years, every full-time volunteer has received at least £300. Plus, we cover your transport to Buxton, and provide you with local accommodation.

See below for details on each role, and email work@underthefringe.com to apply!

Technical Manager

You’ll be responsible for a space at our venue, helping the companies present their shows as best as possible. You’ll work closely with our Head of Technical Operations to ensure the venue runs smoothly and safely.

  • When: Arriving in Buxton (Derbyshire) sometime on Sunday 1st July, for venue get-in on Monday 2nd. Finishing on Sunday 22nd July.
  • Duties: Co-ordinating the various shows using the space: leading their tech rehearsals, leading change-overs between shows and looking after the space; operating some shows; helping acts create the effects they want with the lights and sound equipment available. A little email correspondence would also be useful in May/June (but not much).
  • Hours: Sometimes from as early as 9am and til as late 12midnight, but with many breaks in-between.
  • Compensation: Accommodation in Buxton and transport to and from Buxton is all paid for. Our team work as volunteers but we pay a turnover-related subsistence of around £200-£350.

Box Office Manager

You’ll head up our Front-of-House team, selling tickets and co-ordinating voluntary staff and interns. You’ll take responsibility for making sure the audience is happy, the venue looks good, and tickets are selling smoothly. You’ll be working with a large, shifting team, across two venues.

  • When: Arriving in Buxton (Derbyshire) sometime on Sunday 1st July, for venue get-in on Monday 2nd. Finishing on Sunday 22nd July.
  • Duties: selling tickets to audience members, co-ordinating junior volunteers, closing/opening the box office, keeping track of money discrepancies, and dealing with customers, and managing the look of the Box Office.
  • Hours: Sometimes from as early as 11am and til as late 11pm, but with many breaks in-between.
  • Compensation: Accommodation in Buxton and transport to and from Buxton is all paid for. Our team work as volunteers but we pay a turnover-related subsistence of around £200-£350.
